Sanctum specie is native to the Florida Keys and Bahamas where the bloom is the national flower. Genus is the source of lignum vitae - the densest and hardest wood in nature. The tender young leaves are a food source for the lyside sulphur, a rare butterfly of the Keys. Officinale specie is native to the Caribbean and is the national tree of Jamaica.
